A Conversation on Power in Organizational Systems

with Barry Oshry, Chief Theorist Officer at Power + Systems

At the October SFLODN meeting we experienced the "Power Lab," a simulation that explores the complex dynamics in an organization as its members try to meet their interrelated goals. In a very short amount of time we all experienced these realities:

  • “Bottoms,” those lowest in the organization, are energized but powerless to do what they feel they should
  • “Tops,” the senior leaders, lack information and feel disconnected
  • And "Middles," or middle managers, feel squeezed and pulled in every direction

The results were amazingly real to all who attended, and we left wanting more...  This webinar will give you more!

Barry Oshry has agreed to share with us the history of his model, its application in organizational life and specifically how OD and development professionals can help the crucial role of Middles survive in the middle space.

About our presenter
After 20 years of observing groups out of NTL (national training labs), Barry Oshry started his own Power Labs in Boston, MA. During the Power Labs, Barry observed natural conditions and behaviors that exist in organizational life. He developed a simple yet fascinating model with Tops, Middles, Bottoms and Customers of the organization along with a powerful organizational simulation.  For the past 35 years, Fortune 500 companies have turned to his company, Power + Systems, to improve their organization, align systems, and develop leaders.
